Ohrid Lake

Lake Ohrid (Macedonian: Охридско Езеро, Albanian: Liqeni i Ohrit), straddles the mountainous border between southwestern Macedonia and eastern Albania. It is one of Europe's deepest and oldest lakes, preserving a unique aquatic ecosystem that is of worldwide importance, with more than 200 endemic species. The importance of the lake was further emphasized when it was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979 and when, in 2010, NASA decided to name one of Titan's lakes after Lake Ohrid. The towns situated at the lakeside are Pogradec in Albania, along with Ohrid and Struga in Macedonia.

Geography

Lake Ohrid is the deepest lake of the Balkans, with a maximum depth of 288 m (940 ft) and a mean depth of 155 m (508 ft). It covers an area of 358 km² (138 sq mi), containing an estimated 55.4 km³ of water. It is 30.4 km long by 14.8 km wide at its maximum extent with a shoreline length of 87.53 km, shared betweenMacedonia (56.02 km) and Albania (31.51 km). The Ohrid Lake is divided between Republic of Macedonia and Albania. Of the total surface area, 248 km² belongs to Republic of Macedonia and 110 km² belongs toAlbania

Origin

The Ohrid and Prespa Lakes belong to a group of Dessaret basins that originated from a geotectonicdepression during the Pliocene epoch up to five million years ago^[3] on the western side of the Dinaric Alps. Worldwide, there are only a few lakes with similarly remote origins with Lake Baikal and Lake Tanganyikabeing the most famous. Most other, short-lived lakes have a life span of less than 100,000 years before they are eventually filled up with sediments. It is believed that in the case of Lake Ohrid this process was delayed by its great depth and small sediment input from its filtered spring inflows. Moreover the Ohrid-Korca graben to the south of the lake is still tectonically active and might compensate sedimentation by subduction. In contrast to Lake Ohrid, Lake Prespa is likely to have turned dry several times in its history, as a result of its karstic underground.^[4] In 2008, Macedonian media reported that international experts will be researching the lake in order to determine its age.^[5]

Berovo Lake is a freshwater lake located in the Republic of Macedonia.

The lake lies within 7 km of the Macedonia-Bulgaria Border, near the town of Berovo. The lake is surrounded by evergreen and deciduous type species of forests. Many locals go swimming, fishing, or sailing in the lake. The forested areas that surround the lake are protected by the Macedonian Forestry Police. Illegal cutting down forested areas for fire is prohibited in most areas of the country.

Berovsko jezero izgrađeno je 1970. godine podizanjem 60 metarske brane na Ratevskoj reci kod predjela Linakot u Maleševskoj planini . Podignuto je da se osiguraju dovoljne količine pitke vode za obližnja naselja Berovo i Pehčevo. Berovsko jezero udaljeno je 7 km od gradića Berovo, dugo je 2,5 km, sa prosječnom širinom od 0,5 km. Leži na nadmorskoj visini od 986 m, površina jezera je 0,75 km².

Jezero je okruženo bjelogorično-crnogoričnom šumom. Pokraj jezera podignut je restoran sa bungalovima, a uz njega turističko vikend naselje sa kućama za odmor.

Због туристичког развоја језера локална самоуправа општине Берово и влада Републике Македоније су обезбедиле пројектну документацију којом се даје техничко решење за збрињавање отпадних вода. Ово је било потребно јер на обалама Беровског језера постоје изграђене и планира се изградња нових викендица из којих отпадне воде истичу по површини, а оне потом долазе до језера^[1].

Lesnovo monastery - Saint Gavril Lesnovski ... Lesnovo village is located in the vicinity of Probistip, 900-1000 meters above sea level. The village monastery St. Gavril Lesnovski was constructed in 1347 by the ruler Oliver 1st. The monastery is known for its manuscript-writing school and the wood-carved iconostasis from 1811, a work of art performed by the Mijak craftsman. The monastery is the centre of the Christianity in this part of the country and has been visited by many during religious holiday services.

The village Lesnovo is 17 kilometers from Probistip. An asphalted road leads to it. The village has its own authentic architecture and an enormous very old ethnological collection. The Lesnovo environment is very interesting - the landscape is predominately rocks, naturally sculptured, among which the most impressive one is the so-called "Virgin Mary with a Child".
